The Story of Kevin Onyinge Abuso: A Testimony of Faith and Endurance
A Life of Rejection and Pain
In 2017, Kevin Onyinge Abuso, now a volunteer of Jehovah Saint's, faced a life-altering moment when his relatives held a meeting at his family home. During this meeting, he and his mother were told that he was born out of wedlock and therefore had no right to inherit any family wealth. They were advised to leave the home and relocate to their "ancestral land." This news shattered their hope and left them in despair.
Some people in the meeting yelled in anger, while others were deeply sorrowful. Despite the mixed emotions, Kevin and his mother began their journey away from the home, unsure of where they were heading. Tragically, after three weeks, his mother passed away, leaving Kevin completely confused, hopeless, and heartbroken.
A Painful Burial and Further Rejection
The local area chief intervened upon hearing about the situation and forced Kevin's family members, who had chased them away, to take responsibility for burying his mother. However, the burial was rushed and lacked a proper program, taking place just three days after her death.
Two days after the burial, Kevin was told to leave the home once again. The pain of rejection was unbearable. Friends abandoned him, and no one wanted to associate with him. Feeling utterly alone, Kevin was overwhelmed by frustration and sorrow, leading him to contemplate suicide.
Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Although he considered ending his life, God’s grace intervened. A voice in his heart reminded him not to do so, and he found the strength to carry on.
Struggles for Survival
At the time, Kevin was still a schoolchild, but the weight of his struggles caused him to become a truant. Each morning, he would wake up early to work in people’s gardens as a laborer, earning a small amount of money to cover basic needs like food. Eventually, the challenges became too overwhelming, and he dropped out of school in Class Six.
To survive, Kevin worked as a shepherd, caring for someone else’s cattle. Even then, meals were scarce. At times, he would eat leftovers or go an entire day without food. His health deteriorated, leaving him thin and weak.
Matthew 6:26 – “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
With no hope and no direction, Kevin’s life took a turn for the worse, and he ended up living on the streets. He scavenged for food in dustbins, eating banana peels and remnants of discarded meals. His friends and relatives abandoned him entirely, branding him a beggar and treating him with contempt.
An Act of Kindness and Another Setback
One day, God sent a Good Samaritan who found Kevin sleeping near a dustbin. This kind soul took Kevin to his home and cared for him for two years. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when food and jobs became scarce, the man could no longer support Kevin. With his own family to care for, he asked Kevin to leave.
Early one morning, Kevin was sent away with his belongings packed in a sack. He sat under a tree, tears streaming down his face as he thought of his parents and the life he had lost.
Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
A Life of Hardship and Perseverance
Kevin managed to rent a small, poorly maintained house to shelter himself. From 2019 to the present day, he has been working in people’s gardens to earn money for rent and basic needs. However, the challenges are immense. At the beginning and end of each month, he faces the pressure of paying his landlord and securing food.
Despite the hardships, Kevin continues to endure. His life has been a series of challenges that could bring anyone to tears. Yet, through it all, he has experienced God’s grace and provision, even in the most desperate moments.
Romans 5:3-4 – “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
A Message of Hope
Kevin’s story is one of pain, rejection, and relentless struggle, but it is also a testimony of God’s faithfulness. Even in the darkest moments, God has provided glimpses of hope and strength to carry on.
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Kevin’s life reminds us that no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, God is always with us. His grace sustains us, and His plans for us are greater than we can imagine.
Let Kevin’s story inspire you to trust in God, even when life feels impossible. Through faith, perseverance, and the kindness of others, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
