Archbishop Nathaniel Gbah of Jehovah Saints Church in Liberia, West Africa, recently shared a profound message accompanied by evocative photos, reflecting on the momentous event of the temple veil being torn at the time of Jesus' death. This event, recorded in Matthew 27:51, carries deep spiritual significance and marks a pivotal transition from the old covenant to the new covenant established through Jesus Christ.
The Miracle of the Torn Veil
Matthew 27:51 states, "Behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom." This miraculous tearing of the veil was not just a display of divine power but a symbolic act rich with meaning. The veil, a thick and strong barrier, separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the temple, representing the divide between God and humanity. Its tearing signified the end of the old law of ordinances, which had become like a worn-out garment, no longer needed because of the fulfillment brought by Jesus' sacrifice.
Fulfillment of the Old Covenant
The Archbishop emphasized that Jesus' death fulfilled the requirements of the sacrificial system, rendering the old covenant obsolete. Hebrews 10:19-20 explains, "Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body." With Jesus' sacrifice, the need for animal sacrifices was abolished, as the ultimate atonement was made through His blood. The place of these symbolic rites was marked with decay, indicating the transition to a new era of grace and redemption.
Revelation of God's Glory
The tearing of the veil revealed the hidden things of the old dispensation, allowing believers to see the mercy seat and the glory of God. Unlike Moses, who covered his face with a veil, Jesus revealed God's glory openly. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 speaks of this unveiling: "But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Through Jesus, life and immortality were brought to light, manifesting truths hidden since the world's foundation.
Abolition of the Annual Atonement
The annual ceremony of atonement, which required the sprinkling of blood within the veil, was abolished by Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice. Hebrews 9:12 affirms this: "He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption." No longer is the blood of animals needed, for Jesus has entered the heavenly sanctuary with His own blood, granting believers direct access to God.
Access to God for All Believers
The Archbishop highlighted that the rent veil signifies the open access to God now available to every believer in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:18 declares, "For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit." The veil's tearing from top to bottom illustrates that this access is complete and unrestricted, allowing believers to approach God's throne with boldness and confidence.
The Opening of Paradise
The opening of the Holy of Holies symbolizes the opening of the gates of paradise for all saints through Jesus' Passion. Revelation 3:7 states, "These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open." Our bleeding Lord holds the key to heaven, inviting us to enter into heavenly places and sit with Him until our enemies are made His footstool.
Archbishop Nathaniel Gbah's message on the tearing of the temple veil invites us to embrace the new covenant established through Jesus Christ. This event signifies the fulfillment of the old law, the revelation of God's glory, and the abolition of the annual atonement. It grants believers direct access to God and opens the gates of paradise. As we reflect on this profound truth, let us enter into the heavenly places with Christ, rejoicing in the freedom and grace He has provided.
