Pastor Arfan Bashir of Jehovah Saints Church shared photos from a recent church service. The congregation gathered for worship and to hear a powerful sermon based on Jonah 3:3-6

Sermon Highlights: "The Power of Fasting and Repentance"

  1. Main Scripture: Jonah 3:3-6

    • "Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, 'Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.' The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth."

    • The sermon emphasized the transformative power of fasting and repentance as demonstrated by the people of Nineveh. Their collective humility, fasting, and prayers moved the heart of God, leading Him to forgive their sins and spare their city.

  2. Key Message: Fasting Can Change God's Will

    • Pastor Nadeem explained how the act of fasting, combined with sincere repentance, can bring about divine mercy. This is evident in the story of Nineveh, where God relented from bringing destruction after seeing their genuine contrition.

  3. Supporting Scriptures:

    • Joel 2:12-13: "Even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity."

    • Matthew 6:16-18: Jesus teaches about fasting, emphasizing that it should be done with a humble heart, seeking God’s favor rather than human recognition.

    • 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Reflection:

The story of Nineveh is a timeless reminder of God’s mercy and the power of prayer and fasting. As Pastor Nadeem highlighted, when we turn to God with a repentant heart, He hears us and responds with compassion.
