What Is It Like to Be Homeless? Understanding the Causes and Solutions to Homelessness

Homelessness is a harsh reality that affects millions of people across the United States and around the world. It’s a life of uncertainty, struggle, and survival—a life most of us cannot fully comprehend. While we sleep in our warm, cozy beds, countless men, women, and even children are left to sleep on cold concrete, often exposed to the elements, especially during the unforgiving winter months.

At Jehovah Saints Global Outreach, we are committed to shining a light on the plight of the homeless and working tirelessly to provide them with the resources, shelter, and hope they desperately need. Our mission begins here in the United States, where homelessness is a growing crisis, and extends globally as we aim to bring God’s love and practical solutions to those in need.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what it’s like to be homeless, the root causes of homelessness, and how we can all play a part in addressing this issue through compassion, action, and prayer.

What Is It Like to Be Homeless?

To be homeless is to live without the basic necessities that many of us take for granted—a roof over your head, a warm bed to sleep in, and the security of knowing where your next meal will come from. It’s a life of constant instability, where survival becomes the primary focus.

Here are some of the daily struggles faced by homeless individuals:

  1. Sleeping on the Streets Many homeless people have no choice but to sleep on sidewalks, park benches, or under bridges. During the winter, this becomes even more dangerous as exposure to freezing temperatures can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, or even death.

“And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee.” – Leviticus 25:35

  2. Lack of Basic Hygiene Without access to clean water, restrooms, or hygiene products, maintaining cleanliness becomes a challenge. This can lead to health issues, social stigma, and a loss of dignity.

  3. Food Insecurity Many homeless individuals rely on soup kitchens, food banks, or the generosity of strangers to eat. Hunger is a constant companion for those living on the streets.

  4. Isolation and Stigma Homelessness often leads to feelings of isolation and rejection. Society tends to look down on the homeless, assuming they are lazy or responsible for their situation, which only deepens their emotional pain.

  5. Vulnerability to Violence Homeless individuals are at a higher risk of being victims of violence, theft, or exploitation. Living without shelter leaves them exposed and unprotected.

  6. Mental and Physical Health Struggles The stress of homelessness takes a toll on both mental and physical health. Many homeless individuals suffer from untreated illnesses, depression, and anxiety.

What Causes Homelessness?

Homelessness is rarely the result of a single factor. It’s often caused by a combination of circumstances that leave individuals and families without a safety net. Here are some of the most common causes:

  1. Economic Hardship The cost of living continues to rise, while wages and benefits often fail to keep up. For many, a single financial setback—such as a medical emergency, job loss, or unexpected expense—can lead to homelessness.

“The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” – Proverbs 22:7

Even those receiving Social Security checks or other forms of government assistance often find that the amount is too low to cover basic expenses like rent, utilities, and food.

  2. Lack of Affordable Housing The shortage of affordable housing in many cities leaves low-income individuals and families with limited options. Many end up living in their cars, motels, or on the streets.

  3. Mental Illness and Addiction Untreated mental health conditions and substance abuse are significant contributors to homelessness. Without proper care and support, many individuals are unable to maintain stable housing.

  4. Domestic Violence Victims of domestic violence often flee their homes to escape abuse, only to find themselves homeless and struggling to rebuild their lives.

  5. Systemic Issues Factors like racial inequality, lack of access to education, and inadequate social services also play a role in perpetuating homelessness.

  6. Natural Disasters and Emergencies Events like hurricanes, floods, and wildfires can displace families and destroy homes, leaving people with nowhere to go.

Jehovah Saints Global Outreach: A Mission to End Homelessness

At Jehovah Saints Global Outreach, we believe that homelessness is not just a social issue—it’s a spiritual call to action. As followers of Christ, we are called to care for the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalized.

“He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given.” – Proverbs 19:17

Our mission begins in the United States, where we aim to address homelessness through a combination of direct aid, shelter construction, and long-term support programs. Once we establish a strong foundation here, we plan to expand globally, bringing hope and healing to those in need around the world.

How We’re Making a Difference

  1. Building Homeless Shelters We are working to create safe, welcoming shelters where homeless individuals and families can find warmth, rest, and support. These shelters will provide not only a bed but also access to meals, hygiene facilities, and counseling services.

  2. Offering Job Training and Resources We believe in empowering individuals to regain their independence. Our programs will include job training, resume workshops, and connections to employment opportunities.

  3. Spiritual Support and Guidance At the heart of our mission is the belief that true healing comes through faith. We offer prayer, Bible study, and spiritual mentorship to help individuals find hope and purpose.

  4. Advocacy and Awareness We are committed to raising awareness about homelessness and advocating for policies that address its root causes.

A Call to Action

Homelessness is not just a statistic—it’s a human tragedy that affects real people with real stories. This Christmas season, as we celebrate the birth of Christ, let us remember His call to love and serve one another.

“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in.” – Matthew 25:35

At Jehovah Saints Global Outreach, we are answering that call. Will you join us? Together, we can provide warmth, hope, and a future to those who need it most.
