Helping the Homeless: A Call to Action for Jehovah Saints Global Outreach
Imagine if every single person on the planet—8 billion people—donated just $1. That would amount to $8 billion dollars. At first glance, this seems like an incredible amount of money, but would it be enough to solve the global homelessness crisis? Unfortunately, the answer is no.
With an estimated 150 million homeless people worldwide, $8 billion dollars would only amount to $53.33 per homeless person. That’s barely enough to provide a meal, let alone address the deeper issues of homelessness such as housing, healthcare, mental health support, and job opportunities. This stark reality highlights the magnitude of the crisis we’re facing and underscores the desperate need for action.
At Jehovah Saints Global Outreach, we believe in the power of collective compassion and faith. Helping the homeless, poor, and needy is not just a moral obligation—it’s a spiritual calling. As Jesus taught, true treasure is not found in material wealth but in acts of love, kindness, and service to others.
The True Treasure: Storing Up Riches in Heaven
Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21,"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
This powerful passage reminds us that the things of this world—money, possessions, and material wealth—are fleeting. True treasure is found in serving others and doing the will of God. When we give to the homeless, the poor, and the needy, we are investing in eternal rewards.
Proverbs 19:17 says,"Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done."
Every act of kindness toward the homeless is seen by God. Whether it’s a donation, volunteering your time, or simply offering a listening ear, these actions reflect God’s love and bring glory to His name.
Why $53.33 Isn’t Enough
Breaking down the numbers, it’s clear that even billions of dollars would fall short of solving homelessness. Here’s why:
Housing Costs: Building or providing shelter for millions of people requires far more than $53.33 per person.
Healthcare Needs: Many homeless individuals suffer from physical and mental health issues that require ongoing care.
Food and Basic Necessities: Providing consistent meals, clothing, and hygiene products for 150 million people is a monumental task.
Job Training and Support: Helping the homeless regain independence involves education, job training, and employment opportunities.
While $53.33 per person might seem like a small contribution, imagine what could happen if people gave more than just $1. Imagine if people donated their time, skills, and resources in addition to their money.
The Biblical Call to Help the Poor
The Bible is filled with verses that emphasize the importance of helping the poor and needy. God’s heart is for the oppressed, the marginalized, and the homeless. Here are some key Scriptures that remind us of our responsibility:
Isaiah 58:7:"Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?"
Proverbs 22:9:"The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor."
Matthew 25:35-40:"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
These verses make it clear that helping the poor is not optional for Christians—it’s a command. When we serve the homeless and needy, we are serving Christ Himself.
Jehovah Saints Global Outreach: How You Can Help
At Jehovah Saints Global Outreach, we are dedicated to being the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world. But we cannot do this alone. We need your help—both financially and through your time and talents.
1. Donate
Every dollar counts. While $53.33 may not be enough to solve homelessness, your donation can still make a significant impact. Contributions help us provide:
Emergency shelter and housing
Food and clothing for the homeless
Medical care and mental health support
Job training and educational programs
In Luke 6:38, Jesus said,"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Your generosity will not only bless others but will also bring blessings into your own life.
2. Volunteer
We need volunteers to:
Serve meals at shelters
Organize clothing drives
Provide mentorship and job training
Pray with and encourage those in need
Galatians 6:9-10 reminds us,"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers."
Volunteering is a tangible way to show God’s love and make a difference in someone’s life.
3. Advocate
Raise awareness about homelessness in your community and advocate for policies that address the root causes of poverty. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, as Proverbs 31:8-9 urges:"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
4. Pray
Finally, we ask for your prayers. Pray for the homeless, for those working to help them, and for hearts to be moved to action. James 5:16 says,"The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."
Where the Treasure Truly Lies
The world often places value on material wealth—rocks, paper, and digital numbers we call money. But as Christians, we know that true treasure lies in serving others and storing up riches in heaven.
In 1 John 3:17-18, we are reminded:"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth."
Helping the homeless and needy is where the real treasure is. It’s not in accumulating wealth but in giving generously and living out the Gospel.
