A Reflection on Pastor David Chohan’s Sermon

Pastor David Chohan of Jehovah Saints Church in Pakistan recently shared some photos of his congregation with me, along with the message he delivered during his sermon. His teaching was based on the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5, which is widely known as the Sermon on the Mount.

This chapter is foundational to Christian teachings, as it contains the Beatitudes and profound lessons on how to live a righteous and God-honoring life. Pastor Chohan’s sermon emphasized the transformative power of Jesus’ words and their relevance to our daily lives.

The Beatitudes: A Call to Blessedness

In Matthew 5:3-12, Jesus begins with the Beatitudes, which highlight the blessings that come to those who embody humility, mercy, purity, and a thirst for righteousness:

  • “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

  • “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)

  • “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)

  • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

Pastor Chohan encouraged his congregation to reflect on these blessings and to strive for a life marked by humility, compassion, and faithfulness. He reminded them that these qualities not only bring spiritual fulfillment but also draw us closer to God’s kingdom.

Living as Salt and Light

Another key part of Matthew 5 is Jesus’ call for His followers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world:

  • “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13-14)

Pastor Chohan spoke about the responsibility of Christians to influence the world positively by living out their faith. Just as salt preserves and light illuminates, believers are called to preserve the truth of God’s Word and shine His love in a world filled with darkness.

A Higher Standard of Righteousness

Matthew 5 also contains Jesus’ teachings on fulfilling the law and living with integrity. He challenges His followers to go beyond outward obedience and to embrace a deeper, heart-level righteousness:

  • “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20)

Pastor Chohan emphasized the importance of internal transformation, urging the congregation to seek purity of heart and to align their thoughts, words, and actions with God’s will.

A Global Reminder of Faith

The photos Pastor Chohan shared beautifully captured the unity and devotion of his congregation. It was inspiring to see believers in Pakistan gathering to worship and learn from God’s Word. Their faith and commitment remind us of the global body of Christ and the power of the gospel to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries.

Encouragement and Prayer

Let us continue to pray for Pastor Chohan, his congregation, and the ministry of Jehovah Saints Church in Pakistan. May God bless their efforts to spread the gospel and strengthen their faith community. As we reflect on Matthew 5, may we also be inspired to live as salt and light in our own lives, embodying the teachings of Jesus in all that we do.
