Purpose

Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. This Admissions and Intake Policy outlines the process for assessing and admitting guests into our shelters while ensuring fairness, dignity, and respect for all.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters, individuals must meet the following criteria:

1. Homeless Status:

   • Applicants must be experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk of homelessness.

2. Age:

   • Adults (18 years and older) are eligible for general shelter services.

   • Minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian unless referred through an authorized agency.

3. Willingness to Participate:

   • Guests must agree to follow shelter rules, policies, and procedures, and engage in an intake assessment.

4. Safety Considerations:

   • Individuals who pose a direct threat to the safety of others, including those with a history of violent behavior, may not be eligible for admission.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters do not discriminate based on race, color, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, age, disability, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by law. All individuals will be treated with dignity and respect throughout the admissions process.

Intake Process

1. Initial Contact:

   • Individuals seeking shelter may contact Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters by phone, in person, or through a referral from a partner agency.

2. Pre-Screening:

   • A brief pre-screening will be conducted to assess eligibility, immediate needs, and availability of shelter space.

3. Intake Assessment:

   • Eligible individuals will complete an intake assessment, which includes:

     • Basic personal information (name, age, gender, etc.).

     • Housing history and current situation.

     • Medical or mental health needs (to ensure appropriate accommodations).

     • Emergency contact information.

     • Consent to abide by shelter rules and policies.

4. Documentation Requirements:

   • While no one will be turned away due to lack of documentation, individuals may be asked to provide identification or other relevant documents if available. Staff will assist in obtaining necessary documentation if needed.

5. Bed Assignment:

   • Guests will be assigned a bed or living space based on availability, family composition, and specific needs (e.g., accessibility requirements).

6. Orientation:

   • New guests will receive an orientation that includes:

     • Review of shelter rules and expectations.

     • Overview of available services and resources.

     • Introduction to staff and other residents, as appropriate.

Waitlist Policy

If the shelter is at full capacity, eligible individuals will be placed on a waitlist and referred to other local shelters or resources for immediate assistance. Staff will contact individuals on the waitlist as soon as space becomes available.

Denial of Admission

Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters reserve the right to deny admission in the following circumstances:

• The individual does not meet the eligibility criteria.

• The individual refuses to comply with shelter rules or policies.

• The individual poses a safety risk to themselves or others.

In cases of denial, staff will provide referrals to alternative resources or shelters whenever possible.

Confidentiality

All information provided during the intake process will be treated as confidential and used solely for the purpose of providing shelter services and support. Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters comply with all applicable laws regarding privacy and confidentiality.

Grievance Process

If an individual feels they have been unfairly denied admission or treated improperly during the intake process, they may file a grievance with the Shelter Director. Grievances will be reviewed promptly, and efforts will be made to resolve concerns fairly and transparently.

Policy Review

This Admissions and Intake Policy will be reviewed annually to ensure it remains effective, equitable, and aligned with best practices for serving individuals experiencing homelessness.
