Client Rights

As a client of Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters, you have the right to:

  • Dignity and Respect:

    • Be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect, regardless of your race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or background.

  • Safe and Secure Environment:

    • Stay in a clean, safe, and secure space, free from violence, harassment, or discrimination.

  • Confidentiality:

    • Have your personal information and circumstances kept confidential, except when disclosure is required by law or is necessary to ensure your safety or the safety of others.

  • Access to Services:

    • Receive access to shelter services, including meals, hygiene facilities, and case management, without discrimination.

  • Participation in Programs:

    • Choose whether or not to participate in faith-based programs, such as Bible studies or prayer groups, without fear of judgment or exclusion.

  • Freedom to Voice Concerns:

    • Express concerns, complaints, or grievances about services or treatment without fear of retaliation or loss of shelter.

  • Support for Growth:

    • Access services and programs that promote personal growth, such as job training, counseling, and life skills workshops.

  • Fair Treatment:

    • Be informed of all shelter policies and procedures and expect fair and consistent enforcement of those rules.

 

Client Responsibilities

As a client of Jehovah Saints Homeless Shelters, you are expected to:

  • Respect Others:

    • Treat other clients, staff, and volunteers with dignity and respect.

    • Avoid discriminatory, threatening, or abusive language and behavior.

  • Follow Shelter Rules:

    • Adhere to all shelter policies, including curfews, check-in procedures, and designated areas for sleeping, eating, and personal belongings.

  • Maintain a Safe Environment:

    • Refrain from bringing weapons, drugs, alcohol, or illegal substances onto shelter property.

    • Avoid violent, disruptive, or unsafe behavior that could harm yourself or others.

  • Participate in Personal Progress:

    • Work collaboratively with case managers and staff to develop and follow an action plan toward self-sufficiency, such as securing housing, employment, or treatment services.

  • Practice Cleanliness and Hygiene:

    • Keep your personal space and shared areas clean and organized.

    • Use provided hygiene facilities and supplies to maintain personal cleanliness.

  • Respect Property:

    • Take care of shelter property and respect the belongings of others.

    • Avoid theft, vandalism, or misuse of shelter resources.

  • Communicate Honestly:

    • Be honest with shelter staff about your needs, challenges, and progress.

    • Notify staff if you are unable to comply with policies or require additional support.

  • Abide by Safety Guidelines:

    • Follow all safety protocols, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and emergency instructions.

    • Report any safety concerns, incidents, or violations to shelter staff immediately.

 

Consequences for Violations

To maintain a safe and respectful environment, clients who fail to uphold their responsibilities may face consequences, including:

  • Verbal or written warnings.

  • Temporary suspension of certain privileges.

  • Removal from the shelter in cases of serious or repeated violations, such as violence, theft, or possession of prohibited substances.

All consequences will be handled fairly and consistently, with consideration for the circumstances and the client’s willingness to cooperate and improve.

 

Grievance Procedure

If you feel your rights have been violated or you have concerns about the shelter’s policies or services, you may file a grievance:

  • Submit a written complaint to the Program Manager or a designated staff member.

  • Your complaint will be reviewed, and a response will be provided within 7 business days.

  • If you are unsatisfied with the resolution, you may escalate the grievance to the Executive Director for further review.
